Baji joined the Partisans, a Yugoslav anti-Nazi resistance force after the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was attacked by the Axis powers of Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Bulgaria in 1941.

In October 1942, occupying soldiers apprehended him in Belgrade and imprisoned him in the Banjica Concentration Camp. He was transported to the Mauthausen detention camp in September 1944.

While incarcerated, Baji sketched scenes from his daily existence. and later stated regarding his work: “Drawing was my way of defying fate in the concentration camp.” I’d doodle on any scrap of paper I could find, with a pencil little bigger than a baby finger.”

Also, “I did this in secret, risking my life.” I kept the drawings hidden beneath my shirt, under my bed, or buried them underground. I came across a fire extinguisher bottle one day.

The next evening, I emptied it and hid my sketches inside. I buried the bottle around midnight. I excavated the sketches after the camp was evacuated.”

After the camp was liberated by American forces, Baji returned to Belgrade with approximately 150 sketches and continued his education at Belgrade’s University of Arts.

He graduated from Belgrade’s Academy of Arts in 1949, alongside Milo Milunovi, Ivan Tabakovi, and Nedeljko Gvozdenovi.

After completing his specialist studies with Marko Elebonovi, he was one of the first assistant professors at the Belgrade Academy of Arts, where he remained until his retirement in 1979.

Professor Baji’s class included a number of well-known Serbian painters. He was a member of the bands “Independent” (1951-55) and “The December Group” (1955). (1955-60). These movements employed modernism to counter socialist realism.

In 1952, he had his first solo show at the ULUS Gallery in Belgrade. He also helped to establish the Baka Topola Art Colony. (1953).

This is where he finished his first large-format mosaic, an obelisk dedicated to the conquest of space. His final work is distinguished by a large number of mosaics and fresco paintings. (compositions in space).

Particularly noteworthy is the memorial construction of the Partisan Necropolis at Resanovci. (1971). He initially showed the new cycle of large-format Mauthausen paintings in 1967. The drawing he did while in the concentration camp inspired the painting.

Baji then released the monograph “Mauthausen 106621” in 1975. “Let the youth, unaware of the tragic of the times past, or its life, direct their endless enthusiasm towards the farthest stars, but never again back to the times we endured,” he remarked in the prologue.
