The Sudoku puzzle first appeared in Nikoli’s early publications. He grew interested in the riddle after discovering it in 1984 under the term “Number Place.” During his brief foray into horse racing, he coined the term “Sudoku.” He simplified Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru (“numbers should be single”) on the advice of his peers. When the game reached the United Kingdom and the United States, it exploded in popularity.

Kaji has also designed or popularized a variety of other puzzle games, notably Masyu. On July 31, 2021, ten days before his death, he announced his retirement as Nikoli’s leader. Yoshinao Anpuku, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, succeeded him as president.
