Gino Vannelli’s Profession & Career

Vannelli and his brother Joe came to Los Angeles in 1972. The two brothers sat in the parking lot outside A&M Studios for hours, desperate and broke, hoping for a record deal. Vannelli sprinted toward Herb Alpert, co-owner of A&M Records, and handed him a demo cassette while being pursued by security guards.

In the summer of 1973, Alpert signed Vannelli and issued his debut album, “Crazy Life.” He later appeared on the television dance show ‘Soul Train.’ Following that, he was invited to tour with Stevie Wonder in 1974.

Climbing the success ladder

His third album, “Gist of the Gemini,” was released through A&M Records in 1976. Gino Vannelli’s sixth studio album, “Brother to Brother,” produced the single “I Just Wanna Stop,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard magazine chart, No. 1 in Canada, and garnered a Grammy Award nomination. His subsequent album, “Nightwalker,” had a top-five hit, “Living Inside Myself.”

Despite the success of his singles “Black Cars” and “Hurts to Be in Love” (1985), as well as “Wild Horses” (1987), he only performed live irregularly in the 1980s following his 1979 world tour. In 1990, he released the album “Inconsolable Man” and toured widely for the first time in over a decade. In 1991, he published the CD “Live in Montreal.”

Martine St. Clair, a Quebec singer, sang “Wheels of Life” as a duet with Vanelli, as well as a French-language version called “L’Amour Est Loi” in 1993. Vanelli waited four years after his previous ‘Live’ album to release one of his best albums to date, the jazz-influenced “Yonder Tree.” When it was released in 1995, the album gained critical and popular praise.

He published “Slow Love,” a collection of wonderfully made romantic songs, in 1998, slightly more than his previous album. With BMG, he published “Canto” in 2003. This album features melodies sung in English, Italian, Spanish, and French, which were especially popular in Europe.

He continued his musical endeavors.

In 2006, he published a best-of album, however, he departed from tradition by incorporating 7 entirely new pop songs alongside many of his previously best-known tracks.

Following great performance and festival success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he made The Netherlands his home, where he spends several months of the year recording, performing, and teaching. In early 2008, he launched his new album, which he co-wrote, performed, and produced with Dutch jazz pianist Michiel Borstlap.

Vanneli became a sports icon during the Boston Celtics’ 2008 NBA championship run. During the 2008 season, following each blowout home victory, the video crew at the TD Banknorth Garden aired a clip from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand depicting a bearded disco dancer wearing in a tight Gino Vannelli T-shirt. T-shirts featuring Vannelli grew popular during Celtics games, and the tradition became known as “Gino Time” in Boston.

“People Gotta Move” became a modest hit in the Netherlands in 2008 after being used in an ANWB commercial on TV and radio. On May 13, 2014, Sono Recording Group published Vannelli’s Live in L.A. CD/DVD package. Vannelli’s first concert in the city in over 15 years was caught live onstage at the historic Saban Theater in Los Angeles on November 8, 2013. The song also marks the first time the three Vannelli brothers have performed together onstage in many years.
