Vidal Sassoon was born on January 17, 1928, in Hammersmith, London, England. He died at the age of 84 and was born under the sign of Capricorn. Meanwhile, he adhered to the Judaism religion and was of British nationality.

His parents are Jack Sassoon (father) and Betty Sassoon (mother). He also grew up with his younger brother, Ivor, who died at the age of 46 following a heart attack. His father left the family when he was three years old for another lady. As a result, the family fell into abject poverty.

Vidal and his younger brother were subsequently placed in a Jewish orphanage due to his mother’s poverty as a single parent, where they resided for seven years until his mother remarried when he was eleven. His mother could only visit them once a month and could never take them out.

Sassoon went to Primary School on Essential Road. His peers sometimes teased him for being Jewish in the midst of a Christian majority. During WWII, he joined a Jewish anti-fascist organization in London. He then spent a few years in the Israeli army.

Sassoon’s mother attempted to enroll him as an apprentice in a hairdressing school when he was 14 years old. When she found out how much it cost, she was really disappointed. Adolph Cohen, a well-known stylist, eventually agreed to give him the position for free.

Sassoon began training with renowned stylist Raymond Bessone after returning from the war. In 1954, he launched his salon on Bond Street in London. He started experimenting with various hairstyles. Vidal Sassoon found inspiration in architecture. He liked geometric shapes. Furthermore, he loved clean and natural hair that was free of styling agents such as spray or lacquer.

Roman Polanski commissioned Sassoon to create a pixie cut for actress Mia Farrow for the film Rosemary’s Baby in 1968. He agreed, and his name appears in the film. His business was fast growing. Throughout the United States, he opened dozens of salons and beauty schools.

In 1973, Sassoon launched his “Vidal Sassoon” hair-care product range. The shampoos and conditioners were marketed all over the world, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Over the years, the company was bought out by a number of corporations. It was eventually acquired by the Procter and Gamble Corporation of Ohio.

Sassoon is the co-author of A Year of Beauty and Health, which he co-wrote with his ex-wife, Beverly Sassoon. He also had a short-lived TV show called Your New Day with Vidal Sassoon in the late 1970s.

By the 1980s, Sassoon had sold all of his businesses. He wants to dedicate more time to charitable work. In addition, in 1982, he founded the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism, or SICSA, as a research center committed to the non-political, interdisciplinary collection of antisemitic information.

He also began donating to several charities that support education and the arts. He helped with the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

Awards

Queen Elizabeth II made Sassoon a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) at Buckingham Palace in the 2009 Birthday Honours.

Meanwhile, the couple had a son named David who was adopted. In 2002, their daughter Catya died of a heart attack caused by drug addiction. On November 6, 1983, he married former model Jeanette Hartford-Davis. Soon after the wedding, they divorced. Vidal married designer Rhonda Holbrook in 1992 and the couple was married until Vidal died in May 2012.

Sassoon passed away on May 9, 2012. He’d been fighting leukemia for several years. Furthermore, he passed away at home in Bel Air, surrounded by his family.
