Childhood and Early Years
Awkwafina was born in Stony Brook, Long Island, on June 2, 1988. She is 32 years old as of this year. Wally and Tia, both Chinese Americans, emigrated to the United States from South Korea to attend SUNY New Paltz. Tia, a painter, died when Awkwafina was four years old from pulmonary hypertension. Following her setback, Awkwafina began utilizing satire to try to lift the spirits of others around her who were depressed.
She wrote an essay for People magazine in 2019.
“I often wonder what I would have done if my mother hadn’t passed away. I don’t think I’d be here if I hadn’t gone through some kind of trauma to be so delightfully self-deprecating and free.”
Her father and mother reared Awkwafina in Forest Hills, Queens. Every birthday as a teen, she aspired to be on television. Nonetheless, before a 7-year-old Awkwafina saw Margaret Cho on television, she felt a lack of role models who looked like her. Cho “changed my life,” according to Awkwafina. I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for her.” Awkwafina was inspired by Lucy Liu, who hosted Saturday Night Live at the time, and a young Awkwafina waited outside the studios to watch her.
Awkwafina attributes her self-assurance and commitment to her grandmother, who has never encountered a submissive Asian lady. Her grandmother was a loving and caring grandmother who reared her with love and care.
Education
Because the trumpet was the loudest instrument available at the time, Awkwafina began playing it in school (too many kids wanted the drums). Her playing helped her get into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School (the inspiration for the film and television show Fame), but she and her teachers decided she didn’t want to pursue a career as a musician. After graduation, she attended SUNY Albany, where she majored in journalism and minored in women’s studies.
Awkwafina worked as a PR assistant after college, but was fired after the release of “My Vag.” She worked a variety of jobs to make ends meet while pursuing a career in entertainment, including working at a vegan bodega. Her father advised her to look for a more secure job, such as an air traffic controller or a meat inspector, at the time. He did, however, learn to appreciate Awkwafina’s leadership as she rose through the ranks.
Workplace Environment
Nora Lum, a.k.a. Awkwafinaan, is an actress, entertainer, rapper, media personality, author, and television host from the United States. She rose to prominence in 2012 after her rap song “My Vag” went viral on YouTube. Awkwafina came up with the name Awkwafina when she was 16 years old, with the term relating to her uneasy feelings.
Music as a profession
Awkwafina was first drawn to rap music as a child, and by the age of 13, she started rhyming on her own. She subsequently began making her own tracks with GarageBand. She penned “My Vag,” a response to Mickey Avalon’s “My Dick,” when she was 19 years old. In 2012, she uploaded a low-budget video of the amusingly trashy single to YouTube.
Awkwafina released songs like “NYC Bitche$” and “Giant Margaritas” after the debut of “My Vag.” Yellow Ranger, her debut album, was published in 2014. She worked with Cho on the 2016 film “Green Tea,” which mocked Asian stereotypes. Awkwafina was also featured among three other Asian American rappers in the documentary Bad Rap. She made her debut in 2018 with the publication of the album In Fina We Trust.
Awkwafina has no plans to give up music just because her acting career has taken off. Her songs, on the other hand, she argues, may be limited in their appeal.
Movies
In Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Awkwafina made her film debut as a sorority sister (2016). After seeing her famous YouTube video, the film’s star, Seth Rogen, urged her to audition. Awkwafina starred as one of a bunch of female stoners in the film Dude (2018). Dude’s producer, Olivia Milch, co-wrote Ocean’s 8 and recommended Awkwafina to join the film’s all-star cast.
Awkwafina’s star continues to rise with the release of The Farewell in 2019. In her first leading part, she portrayed a Chinese American who is torn between her family’s decision not to inform her Chinese grandmother of her fatal illness diagnosis and her own feelings about it. According to Awkwafina, the role appealed to her in part because of her mother’s unexpected passing. In addition, she became the first Asian American to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy for her work in The Farewell in 2020.
Shows on television
She originally appeared on MTV’s Girl Code in 2014, and then on the offshoot Girl Code Live the following year. In 2018, Awkwafina hosted Saturday Night Live. She was only the second Asian American woman to do so in history. She Is Nora From Queens premiered on Comedy Central in 2020. The film, which is a semi-autobiographical look at Awkwafina’s family and existence in New York City, was renewed for a second season before its broadcast.
