Childhood and Early Years
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982. She will be 39 years old in the year 2021. When Omar, the youngest of seven daughters, was two years old, her mother died. After her mother died, her father, sisters, and aunts took care of her. Omar was up in Mogadishu on the compound of her middle-class family, where her grandfather did not enforce gender stereotypes.
Omar’s childhood was turned upside down by Somalia’s civil war. When she was eight years old, her family fled the country. They ended themselves in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years. Similarly, she relocated to Minnesota in 1997. Her family lived in the Cedar-Riverside district of Minneapolis, which is home to a large number of Somali immigrants. Before going to work for the post office, her father worked as a cab driver. She moved to the United States when she was 17 years old, in the year 2000. She also graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 after attending Edison High School in Minneapolis.
Workplace Environment
After accompanying her grandfather to Democratic caucuses as his translator, she became interested in politics. She then worked as a political volunteer and neighborhood activist. Omar was elected to Minnesota’s House of Representatives in 2016 after defeating a 44-year incumbent in a Democratic primary. Time for Ilhan, a documentary, chronicled her campaign for this seat as well. Omar became the first Somali-American woman elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives with her victory.
She was also elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018 to represent Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which encompasses most of Minneapolis. A 181-year-old ban on head coverings on the House floor was lifted with her entrance in Congress. It allowed her to fulfill her job while wearing her hijab. Her decision to wear the hijab as a means of expressing her cultural identity was influenced by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. According to her,
“I realized we had a responsibility to assist construct a positive narrative about our faith.”

Regarding the fact that she was already married to Elmi in a legal sense. In 2014 and 2015, she filed joint tax returns with Hirsi. She then made amends by paying a fine and back taxes.
In addition, after legally divorcing Elmi, she married Hirsi in January 2018. She filed for divorce the next year, and their marriage was officially dissolved in November 2019. Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant who had previously worked for her, in March 2020. His ex-wife accused Omar of having an affair with her spouse in her divorce suit.
