She then spent almost 10 months disguised in order to befriend her selected targets. During this time, she was even able to get a regular monthly payment from Tehelka. However, the information she gathered was insufficient.
She wrote a book called “Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-Up.” During the preparation of the book, she documented the full transcripts of recordings made by a disguised recording device of several Gujarat bureaucrats and police personnel. During this period, she was also embroiled in a feud with “Tehelka.” Similarly, her novel was lauded by a large number of individuals, including celebrities. In 2018, she was named the “Most Resilient Global Journalist” by the Dutch non-profit Free Press Unlimited for her ability to resist attempts to suppress her work.

Rana Ayyub received the Sanskriti Award for excellence in journalism, the Global Shining Light Award for her undercover investigation revealing the state’s top officials’ complicity in the 2002 Gujarat riots, and Free Press Unlimited’s Most Resilient Journalist Award for continuing her work “despite being harassed both online and offline and receiving death threats.”
She was also awarded the McGill Medal for journalistic bravery, as well as the Muslim Public Affairs Council of USA’s 2020 Voices of Courage and Conscience Award. Similarly, Ayyub has been identified by Time magazine as one of the 10 worldwide journalists who pose the greatest danger to their life and has been highlighted by The New Yorker.
