Marc Andreessen was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on July 9, 1971, to Lowell and Patricia Andreessen. He grew up in New Lisbon, Wisconsin.

He received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his college years, he interned twice at IBM in Texas in the AIX graphics software development group. While at the University of Illinois, Andreessen worked at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). In 1993, he and Eric Bina co-created the Mosaic Web browser.

After graduating in 1993, Marc Andreessen began working at Enterprise Integration Technologies. He met the founder of “Silicon Graphics,” and together they founded Netscape Communications, which launched their flagship web browser, the Netscape Navigator.

Marc Andreessen rose to prominence in 1995 as a result of Netscape’s IPO, and he was also featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Following AOL’s acquisition of Netscape in 1999, Andreessen founded another company, “Loudcloud,” which provided hosting and software services. Later that year, in 2003, Andreessen sold his hosting company to Electronic Data System (EDS).
