Frederick Carlton Lewis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 1, 1961. Lewis comes from a sporting family. Evelyn née Lawler Lewis, his mother, is a retired track and field athlete, and his father, William Lewis, was a track coach. Carl’s parents founded the Willingboro Track Club in 1967 to develop local talent. Carl and his sister, Coral, were deeply affected by this. His father was their first coach, and he trained them.
