Guy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to an African-American father and a Portuguese-American mother and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, in the affluent historic Collier Heights neighborhood, where she attended what was then known as the Northside liberal arts, later renamed North Atlanta high school.

Her mother, Jaye Rudolph (born 1930), was a former high-school teacher, and her father, Reverend William Guy (born 1928), was the pastor of the historic Friendship Baptists of Atlanta, which served as an early home for Spelman College; he was also a university instructor in philosophy and theology. She traveled to New York City at 17 to pursue dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.
