Randall Duane Couture was born in Everett, Washington, on June 22, 1963, to Sharan Amelia and Edward Lewis “Ed” Couture. Couture attended Lynnwood Middle School in Washington. Couture won the State Championship in his final year of high school wrestling at Lynnwood High School. Later, he joined the United States Army, where he served for six years, from 1982 to 1988.
He was given the military rank of Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division, where he wrestled. Couture decided to apply for the U.S. Army Freestyle Wrestling team while serving in the army, but due to an error, his application was sent to Greco-Roman tryouts, where he became a Greco-Roman wrestler. Couture was nominated for Olympic team alternate three times; at the 2000 Olympic Trials, he reached the semifinals and finished as the NCAA Division I runner-up twice.
