Derringer grew up in Fort Recovery, Ohio, and was born in Celina. He is the son of Janice Lavine and John Otto Zehringer, a Nickel Plate Railroad division foreman. His uncle, Jim Thornburg, a well-known guitarist and singer in Ohio, was his first important influence, aside from his parents.
After eighth grade, his family relocated to Union City, Indiana, where he formed The McCoys. Later, Rick changed the band’s name to Rick Z Combo, Rick, and lastly Raiders before returning to the old moniker.

In the early 1970s, Derringer joined Johnny Winter in a band called “Johnny Winter And,” the “And” referring to The McCoys. Derringer released his first solo album, All-American Boy, in 1973, which includes the song “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.” He played guitar on Barbra Streisand’s cover of Steinman’s “Left in the Dark” in 1984. This song was released as the album’s lead single.
Because of their friendship with Cyndi Lauper and Steinman, they teamed once more in 1985 to release the World Wrestling Federation’s Wrestling Album. The album was largely made up of wrestler theme songs. The theme tune, “Real American,” was also utilized by US President Barack Obama to disclose his birth certificate at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Furthermore, Hillary Clinton used it as a campaign song, Newt Gingrich used it as a triumph song, and Donald Trump used it in his campaigns. Rick rejoined Meat Loaf in 1986 for ‘Blind Before I Stop,’ co-writing the song “Masculine.”
In 1987, Derringer helmed the cable TV show Way Off Broadway,’ on which Meat Loaf appeared alongside other guests such as Larry Carlton, Robbie Dupree, and Edgar Winter. In addition, he returned to the World Wrestling Federation and produced Piledriver, the organization’s second soundtrack album. Rick co-wrote the Demolition theme song and recorded a new version of “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” with Gene Okerlund for the collection.
