Mayne began his television work as a reporter for KLVX-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada. He spent seven years working for KSTW-TV in Seattle, Washington. (1982–89). He was also hired as a weekend sports anchor and a daily news reporter.

Mayne was well-known as an anchor for his distinct personality, which included his “Dog Days of Summer Score Dog” segment, in which he used his canine to assist in giving baseball scores. He retired from KSTW in 1989.

From 1990 to 1994, Mayne worked as a freelance reporter and field editor for the network. Later, in 1994, he was hired by ESPN after sending a note asking whether the network would hire him.

He began working for ESPN in 1994 as a SportSmash anchor on ESPN2, then was promoted to the weekend host of RPM 2Night from its inception on Labor Day Weekend in 1995 until August 1997.

Following that, he moved to the main network, where he co-anchored the 11 p.m. SportsCenter with Dan Patrick after Keith Olbermann departed ESPN.
