Al Davis, as he was affectionately known, was born on July 4, 1929. Allen Davis was his given name at birth. He was born in the Massachusetts town of Brockton. His father’s name was Louis Davis, and he worked as a businessman. His father had assets in the clothing industry. They relocated to Brooklyn in 1934, together with his brother, father, and mother. Jerry is his brother’s name.

Al Davis was an accomplished basketball player who had a strong interest in the game. He aspired to play on the Erasmus Hall High School team. This would have given him the opportunity to work with Coach Al Badain. In high school, he played tiny roles. He finished high school and enrolled at Wittenberg College in Springfield. He did play baseball here.

Davis eventually transferred to Syracuse University. He was unable to secure a significant role on the varsity team. He was quite upset and transferred to Hartwick College. Davis didn’t stay long and then returned to Syracuse. He interacted with a number of prominent players. He did take a football tactics class. Davis passed away in 2011.

His search for a college position began after obtaining his degree in Arts (English). He did this while working on his master’s degree. Hofstra University turned him down. He was hired as a freshman football coach at Adelphi University.

Davis did postpone his studies in 1952 and joined the army as a coach. He was the coach of the army football team. After completing his contract with the service, he married his fiancée, Carol Sagal. He did work as a freelancing scout after his marriage.

He did join The Citadel team as an assistant coach in 1955. Here, he worked for the head coach, John Sauer. He did not have a particularly impressive record here, since the squad lost the majority of the tournaments. He was appointed as a backfield coach for the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960.

Davis worked for Gillman, who was the team’s head coach. He joined the Oakland Raiders at the age of 33. He was both the head coach and the general manager at the time. In his first four seasons, he was a huge success. He was chastised for opposing the merger of the AFL and NFL. Under his guidance, the Oakland Raiders were able to attain tremendous success.
