On April 13, 1946, Al Green was born in Forrest City. He has nine additional siblings, and his parents’ names are Robert G. Greene and Cora Lee. Sharecropper was his father’s occupation. At the age of 10, Al used to perform with his brothers in a group called the Greene Brothers. The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, later in the 1950s. When Al was in his teens, his devoutly religious father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson and booted him out of the house. He subsequently began hustling and living with a prostitute. He was also a recreational drug user.
In high school, he established the vocal ensemble Al Greene and the Creations. The band released their song “Back Up Train” on Hot Line Music in 1968. The song charted on the R&B charts, peaking at number 46. However, the subsequent tracks were a flop. They were then introduced to Willie Mitchell, who hired him in 1969.

While he was making the bed for them, she doused him with a saucepan of boiling grits. Second-degree burns on his back, stomach, and limbs resulted. She later shot herself in the head with Green’s.38 revolver. Police discovered a suicide note in her purse.
Green was treated for his burns at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis, and when he was released, he was threatened with a gun by his cousin, who claimed he owed her money. Green later declined to seek charges.
Green founded the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis in 1976. Maxine Green, Green’s sister, went missing from her assisted living home in September 2013, and she has yet to be discovered as of November 2019.
In Memphis, on June 15, 1977, he married his first wife, Shirley Green. They are the parents of three girls. Shirley filed for divorce in 1978, accusing him of domestic abuse. Linda Wills, his former secretary, also brought a $25,000 civil complaint against him in 1974.
