Bea Arthur began her acting career in the mid-1940s as an associate of an off-Broadway theatre group based at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City. She also studied at The New School’s Dramatic Workshop with a German-born director named Erwin Piscator beginning in 1947.

Looking at her stage roles, her roles included Lucy Brown made her Off-Broadway debut in the English-language version of Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera by Marc Blitzstein in 1954, and as Nadine Fesser in Herman Wouk’s Nature’s Way in 1957.

Her other roles include Yente the Matchmaker in the Broadway premiere of Fiddler on the Roof in 1964, as well as the Tony Award-winning role of Vera Charles to Mame by Angela Lansbury in 1966.

After appearing in the short-lived 1983 sitcom Amanda’s (a remake of the British series Fawlty Towers), she was cast in The Golden Girls in 1985. She, too, appeared in films on occasion, reenacting her stage role as Vera Charles in the 1974 film version of Mame.
