Belinda Carlisle’s Profession & Career

Carlisle began her musical career as a drummer with the punk band The Germs under the alias Dottie Danger, though illness prevented her from ever performing live with them.

She formed the Go-(formerly Go’s named The Misfits) with a friend and fellow music beginner Jane Wiedlin shortly after leaving this band. Together with Charlotte Caffey, a bassist-turned-guitarist, Kathy Valentine, a guitarist-turned-bassist, and Gina Schock, a drummer.

The Go-were Go’s one of the most successful American bands of the early 1980s, helping to usher in “new wave music” into popular American radio and becoming the first all-female band in rock history to reach a #1 album. They also created and played their own music.

Furthermore, the band released two more studio albums (including Vacation, which went gold thanks to the title track).

Head over Heels, from the album “Talk Show,” reached #11, but they never replicated the success of their multi-platinum debut, Beauty and the Beat, which featured the songs “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.” The band was instrumental in popularizing new wave music in the United States.

Similarly, this band was the first (and to date, only) all-female band in history to reach a No. 1 album by writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. The band has sold over seven million records globally throughout the course of its career. Unfortunately, the band disbanded in 1985.

Independent Career

Carlisle decided to pursue a solo career after the band disbanded, and her debut solo studio album, “Belinda,” was released in 1986. The album was a success in North America, earning Gold in the United States and Platinum in Canada.

Following the success of her debut album, she released her second studio album, “Heaven on Earth,” in 1987. It was one of the top five best-selling books in the United Kingdom and Australia, and it was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album’s first song, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” topped the singles charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Similarly, she published her third studio album “Runaway Horses” in 1989, which again reached the Top Five in both Australia and the United Kingdom, was certified double platinum in Australia, and platinum in the United Kingdom, but failed to achieve similar success in the United States. She and her former Go-bandmate Go’s reunited for a tour in late autumn 1990 to promote their greatest-hits album “Go Go’s Greatest,” which included a new version of the cover song “Cool Jerk.”

Additional solo albums and reunions of the Go-Go’s

Following this, she released her fourth solo album, “Live Your Life Be Free,” in 1991. Carlisle’s return to music influenced by the 1960s was notable. Sadly, the album was bombed in the United States due to the record label’s lack of promotion. The title tune was a Top 20 smash in the UK and Australia and contributed to the album’s success in Europe (Top 10 in the UK).

As a result, she breached her contract with her American record label. She was still busy in Europe and Australia, and she had a recording contract with Virgin Records, where she published her fifth album, “The Best of Belinda, Volume 1.” It debuted at number one and was certified double platinum in the United Kingdom and platinum in Australia.

“Real,” her fifth solo studio album, was released in 1993. Furthermore, this was Carlisle’s sixth consecutive album to reach the UK Top 10, peaking at number 9. She and the Go-reunited Go’s in 1994 to promote their second collection, Return to the Valley of the Go-Go’s, which included three new songs, including the single “The Whole World Lost Its Head.”

After another promotional tour, the band disbanded. In 1996, she released “A Woman & a Man,” her sixth solo studio album. Furthermore, it peaked at No. 12 in the United Kingdom and was certified gold.

The Go-reunited Go’s in 2001 and released “God Bless the Go-Go’s,” a studio album of new songs. Nonetheless, critics gave the CD mixed reviews. Her seventh studio album, “Voila,” was also released in 2007. “Wilder Shores,” her eighth studio album, was released in September 2017.

Similarly, she featured on ITV1’s Hit Me Baby One More Time, where she performed a cover of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” as well as her own “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”
