Benjamin Cameron Wallace was born on September 10, 1974, as the tenth child of his parents in White Hall, Alabama. He grew up in a large family with twelve siblings. He attended high school in Hayneville, where he was a member of the basketball team. Charles Oakley discovered him at a basketball camp in 1991 and suggested him to Virginia Union University.

His first college basketball game was at Cuyahoga Community College, when he impressed his coach. He eventually transferred to Virginia Union, where he continued to play basketball while also studying criminal justice. He guided the Virginia Union Panthers to the Division II final four while playing with them. After being undrafted for a long time, Wallace travelled to Italy after college to try out for Viola Reggio Calabria.

Wallace’s early NBA career began with the Washington Bullets from 1996 to 1999, a period in which he did not perform well and was unable to enter the playoffs. The team chose to move him to the Orlando Magic, where he spent one season before being dealt to the Detroit Pistons in 2000.

His professional career began to shine with the Pistons, where his defensive dominance ranked among the finest. In 2002-2003, his defensive work ethic was recognized as he was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year. The Pistons made it all the way to the finals for the first time since 1990.

They went on to win the NBA championships that season thanks to Wallace’s assistance. Later, in 2006, he joined the Chicago Bulls before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008. He returned to the Detroit Pistons in 2009 for a second stint until 2012, when he retired. The Pistons decided to retire jersey number 3 in his honor.
