Bennet Omalu is a forensic pathologist and neuropathologist who was born in Nigeria. Bennet was born on September 30, 1968.

Early years

During the Nigerian civil war, Bennet was born on September 30, 1968, in Nnokwa, Idemili South, Anambra. Bennet Onyemalukwube was his birth name. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a civil mining engineer and community leader. Bennet was the sixth of the family’s seven children. The family has Igbo ancestors, who are the majority in the community of Enugu-Ukwu in southern Nigeria. He is a 54-year-old man.

Education

When it comes to Omalu’s educational background, he has been an academically gifted student from infancy. He started elementary school at the age of three. He then attended secondary education at the Federal Government College in Enugu. Omalu began his Bachelor’s degree studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, when he was 16 years old. In June 1990, he received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree. He then finished his internship and worked as a physician for three years in the highland city of Jos.

Omalu was admitted to a visiting scholar program at the University of Washington in 1994 while seeking possibilities for additional study. Later, he relocated to Harlem, New York, to enroll in a residency program at the Harlem Hospital Center. He received anatomic and clinical pathology training here.

Omalu has a number of advanced degrees and certifications to his name. In the year 2000, he finished pathology fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh. He received a fellowship in neuropathology from the same institution two years later, in 2002. In 2004, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health with a master of public health (MPH) in epidemiology. This isn’t the end of the list. He went on to Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration in 2008.

Professional life and career

As a physician, Omalu pursued both his schooling and his job at the same time. He worked as a doctor while pursuing his educational goals. In 1999, he worked at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office under famed pathologist Cyril Wecht. It was then that he became interested in Neurology. He then became the chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California, in 2007. Bennet did, however, resign in 2017. He accused the county sheriff of regularly meddling in death investigations as he walked away.

Omalu inspected Mike Webster’s corpse while working at the coroner’s office in September 2002. Mike, a former professional football player, died suddenly at the age of 50. For numerous years, the Pittsburgh Steelers athlete battled depression as well as cognitive and cerebral disability.Omalu identified high amounts of tau protein in Webster’s brain after a thorough investigation. The tale was subsequently picked up by Hollywood. In 2015, filmmaker Ridley Scott opted to turn the tale into a film called “Concussion,” starring Will Smith as Omalu.

Omalu is the author of three significant novels in addition to all of the aforementioned undertakings. In 2008, he released his first book, “Play Hard, Die Young: Football Dementia, Depression, and Death.” Similarly, in 2014, “A Historical Foundation of CTE in Football Players: Before the NFL, There Was CTE,” and in August 2017, “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side: My Alarming Discovery concerning the Danger of Contact Sports,” was published.
