Bryant Charles Gumbel was born in New Orleans on September 29, 1948. Richard Dunbar Gumbel was a judge, and Rhea Alice LeCesne worked as a clerk. His parents were both of Louisiana Creole descent. His surname was derived from his Jewish-German ancestors.

He grew up on Chicago’s South Side. He graduated from the De La Salle Institute. He graduated from Bates College with a degree in Russian history in 1970. He also edited Black Sports Magazine for a year before leaving in 1972.

Bryant Gumbel began his television anchoring career with KNBC-TV in October 1972. He became their Los Angeles-based sportscaster.

Gumbel co-hosted the National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck in 1975 for NBC Sports. He worked for NBC until 1982, and he hosted several NBC sporting events, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the National Football League.

He left NBC in 1982 to host The Today Show. He was named Today’s primary anchor.
