Coverage of the Taliban Offensive in 2021
In July 2021, she began working in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she chronicled the Taliban’s takeover of the country. Bellis was one of three women present at the first Taliban press conference in Kabul. She drew attention to herself during that news conference by bringing up women’s rights.
A few days later, she was granted the opportunity to meet Taliban leader and Cultural Commission member Abdul Qahar Balkhi in person. In the interview, New Zealand was praised for its recent humanitarian support, which included a NZ$3 million grant to two international charity groups for refugee relief.

Return to New Zealand Attempts
Due to Qatar’s extramarital pregnancy rules, Bellis departed Al Jazeera in November 2021 while pregnant with her partner Jim Huylebroek, a photojournalist and writer for The New York Times. Due to visa issues, the couple was unable to stay in Belgium for a lengthy amount of time, so they fled to Afghanistan, the only other nation for which they appeared to have visas.
She was unable to return home quickly due to New Zealand’s border restrictions and eventually turned to the Taliban for assistance. Bellis claims that the group’s top contacts encouraged her to just state that she was married and to contact them if things escalated. Do not be afraid.
Staff approached Bellis about filing a fresh application that would fit the criteria for emergency travel on January 28, according to Chris Bunny, manager of New Zealand’s Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) system.
Along with national publications such as Stuff and The New Zealand Herald, international publications such as The Guardian, GB News, The Washington Post, ABC News, and The Sydney Morning Herald reported Bellis’ tale.
Furthermore, human rights activists, observers, and Afghans, including Emran Feroz of Austria, Muzhgan Samarqandi of New Zealand, Sahar Fetrat of Human Rights Watch, and Farahnaz Roman of the United Kingdom, criticized the media coverage of Bellis’ story for emphasizing the disparity in treatment of Afghans and non-Afghans and diverting attention away from Taliban abuses of Afghan women and journalists.

On January 31, Bellis argued that the MIQ system did not accommodate pregnant women and that the application process was difficult and ambiguous due to technicalities and caveats. During an interview with Radio New Zealand, she made these assertions. Bellis also revealed that the couple had received an asylum offer from an undisclosed third country. According to a statement issued by COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins on the same day, the government has allocated Bellis a place to fly to New Zealand within a 14-day window after meeting the emergency allocation standards. Hipkins reported that Bellis had stated that she would not leave until late February, despite MIQ’s request that she reconsider her departure dates.
On June 22, Hipkins issued a public apology for publishing personal information without Bellis’ permission and making “inaccurate comments” that angered her. As a result, Bellis and Huylebroek have received dangerous internet threats. Hipkins had been led to believe that Bellis had visited Afghanistan and gotten consular assistance. Hipkins apologized to Bellis individually on March 15. Bellis defended her role in drawing attention to problems with the MIQ system.
