Wepner chose to join the US Marine boxing team, where he allocated and safeguarded his place as a fighter capable of withstanding punches, and subsequently became a military champion. He also rescued three military personnel from burning aircraft.

He began his professional boxing career in 1964 and steadily rose to prominence and reputation on the Northeast Boxing Circuit. Similarly, he had boxing experience while on the US Marine team and previously worked as a Bouncer in clubs, so winning the games and capturing the heavyweight title was a piece of cake for him.

He had fought renowned boxers such as Muhammad Ali. At the time, he was working as a liquor salesman and had to train to fight with the world champion boxer.
