In a 2008 essay, Jacob Heilbrunn noted that Peltka was “closely associated with neocon positions on Iraq and Iran.” However, neocons have turned against her, arguing that she is attempting to eliminate neocon influence at AEI because she previously worked for Jesse Helms, who supported more traditional Republican foreign-policy beliefs.

Pletka acknowledged that she was “not a big fan of torture,” but claimed that it may be justifiable in particular conflict scenarios, such as “if it is absolutely imperative to find out something at that moment.” Pletka slammed the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA torture, which found the agency guilty of utilizing torture methods in 2014. She called the study “Feinstein’s partisan screed,” claiming that the CIA procedures produced useable intelligence and were lawfully allowed by the Justice Department.

Pletka expressed her concern in 2020 op-ed for The Washington Post that Democratic nominee Joe Biden “would begin an assault on the institutions of government that preserve the nation’s small ‘d’ democracy” and expressed the possibility that she “may be forced to vote for” Republican incumbent President Donald Trump because “he wears his sins on the outside.” Alexandra Petri of the Washington Post mocked the op-ed in an essay titled “I can’t believe you’re forcing me to vote for Trump, which I definitely didn’t want to do.”
