McDaniels was born and raised in the Queens neighbourhood of Hollis. Run encouraged McDaniels to rap rather than DJ in the event of his newly discovered passion. McDaniels eventually preferred rapping to mixing records, earning him the moniker “Easy D.” In 1981, he dropped “Easy D” and switched to “DMcD,” then to the shorter “D.M.C.”

They released their self-titled debut album in 1984 and quickly rose to prominence in the hip-hop industry. Fortunately, the group’s success grew and peaked with its third album, Raising Hell, which made Run-D.M.C. the most popular hip-hop group at the time.
