In the late 1960s, Daryl Dragon began working as a backup musician and pianist for numerous musicians and bands. During The Beach Boys’ early 1970s tours, he played keyboards and appeared on several of their records. During this time, he met Toni Tennille, who was also a Beach Boys backup vocalist.

Captain & Tennille was founded by Dragon and Tennille as their own musical team. They obtained a record deal with A&M Records and went on to have enormous success in the mid-1970s. Their success came with the publication of their debut hit, “Love Will Keep Us Together,” which reached the top of the charts and earned them a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1975. The duo would go on to have several further singles, including “Muskrat Love,” “Do That to Me One More Time,” and “Shop Around.”

Outside musical works, Captain & Tennille Dragon were members of the band Charles Wright and the Wright Sounds, which included future Watts Band member John Raynford, in 1962. He also played with The Yellow Balloon in 1967. From 1963 to 1966, he attended San Fernando Valley State College before dropping out to join a band with his brothers.

In 1968, Daryl and his brother Dennis created The Mission, a studio band that issued a single called “Calmilly”/”Galing Made It” on the modest Bet Records label. The songs were eventually released on CD in 2005 as part of a collaborative album titled Me and My Brother, which was released in 1971 (together with another brother, Doug, who sang the vocals).

Daryl and his brothers Doug and Dennis recorded sessions for a psychedelic soul/rock album called “The Dragons” in the late 1960s, but they were unable to locate a record label to release the album. BFI stood for “Blue Forces Intelligence” and was the title of the record. Ninja Tune, a UK label, discovered that the master recordings were still in the possession of the recording engineer, Donn Landee, who released the album in 2007.

Captain Keyboard is also acknowledged in Bob Smith’s 1970 double LP The Visit. Furthermore, he made important contributions to the Beach Boys’ 1972 album Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” with keyboarding and musical scoring; he co-wrote the track “Cuddle Up” with Dennis Wilson.
