Dennis DeYoung was raised in Roseland, Chicago, by his parents, Maurice and Loraine DeYoung. DeYoung began his profession at the age of 14 with two of his neighbor pals, Chuck and John Panozzo, in 1961. In the late 1960s, the trio recruited two guitarists, James Young and John Curulewski.
Before becoming Styx in 1970, DeYoung and his bandmates titled themselves TW4 in 1968. And the band quickly found popularity. DeYoung spent his early years in the Chicago suburbs, where he was also taught piano. During this time, the band performed in school auditoriums and other modest venues.
