Dennis Franz was born on October 28, 1944, in the small Illinois village of Maywood. Franz Ferdinand Schlachta and Eleanor Schlachta had three children. His father worked as a baker and a postman. His mother was also a postal worker. Heidi and Marlene are his two older sisters.

He was quite athletic while attending this school and was particularly fond of swimming and baseball, among other sports. Later, in 1968, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Theatre from Southern Illinois University. After graduation, he joined the US Army and spent time with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.

He played Earl, the abusive husband, in the Dixie Chicks’ music video “Goodbye Earl.” He played Carmine Lorenzo in “Die Hard 2” in 1992. He played Nathaniel Messinger in the 1998 film “City of Angels.”
