Dennis Franz was born on October 28, 1944, in the small Illinois village of Maywood. Franz Ferdinand Schlachta and Eleanor Schlachta had three children. His father worked as a baker and a postman. His mother was also a postal worker. Heidi and Marlene are his two older sisters.

He was quite athletic while attending this school and was particularly fond of swimming and baseball, among other sports. Later, in 1968, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Theatre from Southern Illinois University. After graduation, he joined the US Army and spent time with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.

He began his acting career at Chicago’s Organic Theater Company. He had become a regular character in the films of two directors by the late 1970s and early 1980s: Robert Altman and Brian De Palma. Dennis has also appeared in Shakespearean plays. His performance as an NYPD officer, however, brought him enormous fame and recognition. He has also appeared as a guest actor on several shows, including “The A-Team.” His other TV appearances include “Hill Street Blues,” in which he played two characters.

Initially, in 1983, he portrayed a corrupt cop named Sal Benedetto, who later commits suicide. This performance became so well-known that he was cast as Lt. Norm Buntz again in 1985. In 1994, David appeared as himself in an episode of “The Simpsons” titled “Homer Badman.” Dennis worked as a commercial spokesman for Nextel in 2000. He played Earl, the abusive husband, in the Dixie Chicks’ music video “Goodbye Earl.” He played Carmine Lorenzo in “Die Hard 2” in 1992. He played Nathaniel Messinger in the 1998 film “City of Angels.”
