The death of the iconic musician was confirmed by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (D). She called the 85-year-old a “prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz,” according to her Twitter. “All of our people’s thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all of those whose lives he touched,” she continued. “Words aren’t enough to convey the art, joy, and magic Ellis Marsalis brought to the world,” says the statement.
Branford and Wynton Marsalis, two of his jazz musicians’ sons, expressed their sorrow over their father’s passing. “My father was a behemoth of a musician and teacher, but an even bigger father,” Branford Marsalis told USA Today. He poured everything he had into making us the best version of ourselves.”
“He went out the way he lived: embracing reality,” Wynton Marsalis added. His son Branford claimed his father was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after being suspected of contracting the sickness and died on Wednesday evening.
Furthermore, up until May 19, Louisiana officials reported more than 1.54 million cases of coronavirus in the state, with at least 90,694 people dying. Additionally, after the news surfaced on Wednesday, singer John Legend tweeted his condolences, writing, “[s]ending love to the Marsalis family.”

In the same way, he left UNO in 2001. In May 2007, Tulane University awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music at Musicians’ Village in New Orleans was named in his honor. The Marsalis family released Music Redeems, a live album recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, in 2010. As part of the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, he performed. All proceeds from the album’s sale will benefit the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music.
He was also a Phi Beta Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity fellow. In 2015, he was named the 24th Man of Music by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the organization’s highest distinction, for supporting the cause of music in America by performance, writing, or any other musical action. During Berklee College of Music’s 50th annual High School Jazz Festival in 2018, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in music.
