Erin Isabelle Burnett was born on July 2, 1976, in Mardela Springs, Maryland, to Esther Margret and corporate attorney Kenneth King Burnett. She was born into a family of Irish and Scottish ancestors. She was raised in Maryland and attended St Andrew’s School, a private co-educational institution in Middletown, Delaware. Erin enrolled in Williams College in Massachusetts after graduating in 1994 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Economy. She began her career as a financial analyst at the institutional investment bank Goldman Sachs, where her father worked as a corporate attorney. There was no turning back after that, as she was immediately invited to work as a writer and booker for CNN’s program “Moneyline.” The most recent edition of the program is still available on Fox Business Network.

After leaving CNN, Erin Burnett joined Citigroup as the vice president of the Digital Media department, leaving behind a lower-level position. She left Citigroup to work as a stock editor for Bloomberg Television for a brief time.

She joined CNBC in 2005 and anchored two segments, “Squawk on the Street” and “Street Signs.” To date, Erin Burnett’s most praised piece was her investigative report titled “Transammonia: An American Business in Iran,” which looked into the illegal ammonia operations of Iranian chemical corporations. The show aired in December 2010 and prompted the corporation to take active steps, including sending press releases to Congressional leaders threatening to sever contacts with Iran and not renewing any contracts with Iranian companies.
