Feliciano Sergio Sabates, Jr. was born in Camagüey, Cuba, on September 9, 1945, to Dr. Feliciano Sabates and Maria Tavio. He is the youngest of six siblings. His family established several successful businesses, including import and export, insurance sales, service stations, and jewelry.

Sabates finished his education at a military school in Camagüey. He and his family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was 15 years old.

Sabates worked in a variety of odd jobs after arriving in the United States, including washing pots and pans at a hospital and working in motels. Later, he began working a twelve-hour shift in a furniture factory. He also worked as a parking lot attendant for National Car Rental. He then worked as a salesman at the City Chevrolet car dealership in Downtown Charlotte. He achieved record car sales and was appointed as the manufacturer’s representative.

Sabates began working as a salesman for Top Sales Company, Inc., which sold retail products, in 1969. Later, in 1974, he purchased the company for which he was working and turned it into the largest and most successful manufacturer’s representative firm in the country. As a thank you for helping him build the company, he sold it to his employees in 2000.

Sabates purchased the Hatteras Yacht dealership in 1988 and transformed it into the largest Hatteras dealership in the world within two years. He purchased Trinity Yachts, the world’s leading custom superyacht builder, with his business partner John Dane. He is also the owner of IYC, one of the world’s largest yacht management, charter, and brokerage firms. Sabates is the president and CEO of FSS Holdings, Inc., a holding company.

Sabates owns the most car dealerships in the country, including Hyundai, Mazda, Sprinter, and others. He bought Hendrick Motorsports in 1987 and became a NASCAR team owner. During the 1996 season, he renamed the team Team SABCO. His team includes drivers such as Tommy Kendall, Kenny Irwin, Jr., Joe Nemechek, Kenny Wallace, Bobby Hamilton, and many more.

Sabates founded the Charlotte Hornets basketball team in 1988 and was an early investor in the World Football League. In the 1990s, he co-founded the company The Charlotte Professional Sports Team, Inc with Carl Scheer and Kyle Petty.

Felix Sabates has received the Best of the Best Award four times, which is only given to the top 10% of dealers nationwide. He has also received numerous honors and awards for his charitable contributions. Sabates is the name of the dining hall at Belmont Abbey College. Honorary Doctorate degrees are also named after him at Elon University and UNC Charlotte.

Felix Sabates Athletic Center was named after him in 2000. In his honor, Levine Children’s Hospital has a special plaque in the main lobby.
