Garry Shandling’s Profession & Career

In early 1973, Garry Shandling relocated to Los Angeles and worked at an advertising firm before selling a script for the hit NBC sitcom “Sanford and Son.” Later, he prepared screenplays for “Welcome Back, Kotter” and went to a story meeting for “Three’s Company.”

Frustrated with the formulaic scripting of situation comedies, he started doing stand-up comedy, which highlighted his whiny self-deprecation and self-absorption. Shandling made his stand-up television debut on “The Tonight Show” in 1981. By 1983, he had established himself as a regular guest host and a prospective successor to regular presenter Johnny Carson.

“It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” debuted in 1986. Shandling portrayed Garry Shandling, a character who was aware he was on a sitcom and frequently breached the “fourth wall,” addressing the audience as he strolled from one set to the next. The show ran till 1990. Instead of hosting his own “real” talk show, he took over as host of HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show” in 1992.

Though fictional, the show was set in the real entertainment world, providing a razor-sharp look at the siege mentality of television production, including narcissistic celebrities, greedy agents, misanthropic writers, and long-suffering staff; Jeffrey Tambor starred as Sanders’s unaware sidekick, and Rip Torn portrayed the overbearing producer.

He maintained his excellent career.

Shandling persuaded his Hollywood pals to appear as themselves on the show, and around 200 celebrities accepted his invitation. The sitcom received Emmy nominations for outstanding comedy series in each of its six seasons on the air. Furthermore, he and writer Peter Tolan were nominated for an Emmy in 1998 for outstanding writing for a comedy series.

He was in several movies, including “Hurlyburly” (1998) and “Trust the Man” (2005). He also played a turtle in the animated film “Over the Hedge” (2006) and a porcupine in the live-action film “The Jungle Book” (2016). Garry Shandling authored and starred in the science-fiction comedy “What Planet Are You From?” (2000), but it failed to attract an audience.

He also appeared as Senator Stern in Iron Man 2 (2010) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). He was uncredited as a health inspector in The Dictator (2012).

Larry Sanders’ autobiography “As told to Garry Shandling,” Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host, was released in 1998. Judd Apatow’s documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling was released two years after Shandling’s death in 2016.

This man presided over the Grammys in 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1994. Similarly, he co-hosted the Emmy Awards in 2003 and hosted it in 2000 and 2004.

He also won two British Comedy Awards, twelve CableACE Awards (eight for The Larry Sanders Show and four for It’s Garry Shandling’s Show), a BAFTA, and two Writers Guild of America Award nominations for The Larry Sanders Show.
