George Jung’s Profession & Career

He had attempted and failed to study advertising at the University of Southern Mississippi prior to his drug smuggling days. Soon after, he started a small-scale marijuana business. Jung was arrested after being caught with an excessive amount of marijuana, but his punishment changed his life forever.

Jung received an unintentional link while serving his sentence at the Danbury Correctional Facility in Connecticut, which might potentially lead to the formation of one of the world’s most powerful drug gangs. It was there that he met fellow convict and Colombian Carlos Lehder, who later introduced him to cocaine. Both men were released at the same time, and after joining the Medellin cartel, they invented more efficient and evasive methods of bringing cocaine from Colombia into the United States.

In an instant, their cartel, which supplied 80 percent of the world’s cocaine, was thriving, and the market increased. Though Jung and Lehder eventually fell out as partners, it opened the door for Jung to work with Pablo Escobar, the famed drug baron, and narco-terrorist.

Jung was detained after being found with many pounds of cocaine in his possession, but he later jumped bail. Needless to say, he quickly returned to his smuggling enterprise, was apprehended, and sentenced to 60 years in prison. George Jung’s sentence was lowered to twenty years after he agreed to testify against former accomplice Lehder. In November 2014, he was freed from prison. He was returned to a California jail two years later for breaking the terms of his release. After serving his sentence, the individual was released from prison in July 2017.

Achievements and Awards

He rose to prominence as a result of the massive amount of cocaine he was able to smuggle into the United States. In 2001, filmmakers made “Blow,” a movie about him starring Johnny Depp.

Jung worked on Heavy alongside T. Rafael Cimino, the nephew of director Michael Cimino, in September 2014. Heavy could be a fictional story about Jung escaping from a Cuban prison and fleeing to Guatemala.
