The Philippine Weightlifting Association granted the athlete a wild card invitation to the Summer Olympics in early 2008. She is the first female weightlifter to represent the Philippines in the Olympics, and the second weightlifter overall.

She finished second to last in a field of twelve weightlifters at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games. Her incredible work was recognized and considered promising for her age.

She then became the first Filipina weightlifter to compete in consecutive Olympics via the Continental and World Qualification Events.

Diaz finished ninth and was on her way to the Olympics. She was chosen to carry the Olympic flag during the Opening Ceremony in London in 2012. Her trainer was Tony Agustin, and they planned a 225-pound lift.

She set a personal best of 97 kg in the grab, placing 12th out of 19 competitors. Her 118 kg Clean and Jerk, however, failed after three attempts. At the time of her first Olympic campaign, she weighed 56.28 kg, making her the lightest competitor.

In the 2012 Olympics, she increased her weight to 57.70 kg but was still unable to compete in the top half.

In order to get on the podium in the 2016 Rio Olympics, she decided to lose weight and get under 53 kg. Fortunately, she won the Gold Medal at the 1st Southeast Asian Weightlifting Championship in Bangkok.

This was the Philippines’ first Summer Olympics medal in twenty years, and their first non-boxing medal since 1936. She became the first Filipino woman and the first Mindanaoan to earn an Olympic medal after competing in the three subsequent Olympics.

On August 8, 2016, she traveled to Zamboanga City to become a Hero of the City.

She joined the Philippine Air Force (PAF) in 2013 through the military branch’s Direct Enlistment Program.

She was assigned to the Air Force Special Service Group initially, and she received an Air Force Specialty Code skill in weightlifting reformation. In 2014, she was also promoted from Airwoman to Airwoman 2nd Class.

She was then awarded a Military Merit Medal and a Presidential Citation Unit Badge for organizing PDF events. She was temporarily assigned to the PAF Personnel Management Center in 2016. Hidilyn was eventually promoted to Airwoman First Class by the PAF.
