Ilhan Omar is a Minnesota-based Democratic politician who belongs to the Democratic-Farmer-Labor-Party. Ilhan Omar was elected to Congress as one of the first two Muslim women.

Childhood and Early Years

Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982. She will be 39 years old in the year 2021. When Omar, the youngest of seven daughters, was two years old, her mother died. After her mother died, her father, sisters, and aunts took care of her. Omar was up in Mogadishu on the compound of her middle-class family, where her grandfather did not enforce gender stereotypes.

Omar’s childhood was turned upside down by Somalia’s civil war. When she was eight years old, her family fled the country. They ended themselves in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years. She and her family were also offered asylum in the United States in 1995. Omar was bullied in middle school in Virginia, where the family initially settled. Similarly, Omar could read but not understand English when she arrived. One way her family kept up with the discourse was to watch reruns of Baywatch.

Similarly, she relocated to Minnesota in 1997. Her family lived in the Cedar-Riverside district of Minneapolis, which is home to a large number of Somali immigrants. Before going to work for the post office, her father worked as a cab driver. She moved to the United States when she was 17 years old, in the year 2000. She also graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 after attending Edison High School in Minneapolis.

After accompanying her grandfather to Democratic caucuses as his translator, she became interested in politics. She then worked as a political volunteer and neighborhood activist. Omar was elected to Minnesota’s House of Representatives in 2016 after defeating a 44-year incumbent in a Democratic primary. Time for Ilhan, a documentary, chronicled her campaign for this seat as well. Omar became the first Somali-American woman elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives with her victory.

She was also elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018 to represent Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which encompasses most of Minneapolis. A 181-year-old ban on head coverings on the House floor was lifted with her entrance in Congress. It allowed her to fulfill her job while wearing her hijab. Her decision to wear the hijab as a means of expressing her cultural identity was influenced by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. According to her,

“I realized we had a responsibility to assist construct a positive narrative about our faith.”

She married her first spouse, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, in a religious ceremony in 2002. After having two children together, daughter Isra and son Adnan, the couple’s relationship changed. They disbanded the party in 2008, following Islamic tradition (they had not been legally married).

Similarly, once her marriage ended in 2008, she struggled to adapt and went so far as to shave her head. Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009. Elmi is the man who has been falsely suspected of being her brother.

In 2011, Omar and Elmi’s marriage ended in religious divorce. She married Hirsi in 2012 and had a third child, daughter Ilwad, with him. Regarding the fact that she was already married to Elmi in a legal sense. In 2014 and 2015, she filed joint tax returns with Hirsi. She then made amends by paying a fine and back taxes.

In addition, after legally divorcing Elmi, she married Hirsi in January 2018. She filed for divorce the next year, and their marriage was officially dissolved in November 2019. Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant who had previously worked for her, in March 2020. His ex-wife accused Omar of having an affair with her spouse in her divorce suit.
