Itzhak Perlman was born on August 31, 1945, in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Jewish parents Chaim and Shoshana Perlman. His parents were born in Sweden and came to Palestine in the mid-1930s, where they married. Itzhak caught Polio when he was four years old and has had to walk with leg braces and crutches ever since. At the age of 13, he traveled to the United States to attend the Julliard School in New York City.

He became interested in the violin after hearing a classical music show on the radio. He taught himself to play the violin after being denied from the Shulamit Music Conservatory owing to his young age. At the age of ten, he delivered his first violin recital at Tel Aviv’s Academy of Music.

He has been in a number of well-known US events and performances. Itzhak initially appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, and then again in 1964. He also appeared on The Tonight Show and Sesame Street, and he performed at various White House events. On July 5, 1986, he performed with the New York Philharmonic in honor of the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary, which was carried live on ABC Television in the United States.

He also performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, Leningrad, Budapest, and a few other Eastern Bloc towns in 1987. Perlman has also recorded jazz, including a jazz album with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. Perlman has served on the faculty at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. He currently teaches one-on-one at the Perlman Music Program, which was started in 1994 by his wife Toby Perlman and Suki Sandler on Long Island, New York.
