Bettcher was hired by the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts after coaching at multiple universities. He coached under Bruce Arians while he was the Colts’ temporary head coach. Later, when Arians was hired as the Cardinals’ head coach, he relocated to Arizona. He was promoted to replace defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who left to become the New York Jets’ head coach.

The Cardinals never finished worse than eighth in the league in overall defense during his tenure as defensive coordinator. Bettcher was seen as the most likely replacement for Bruce Arians after he departed, even bringing in a coaching team that featured Mike McCoy as offensive coordinator and Chuck Pagano as defensive coordinator. Instead, the Cardinals signed Steve Wilks, the former defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.

On January 23, 2018, head coach Pat Shurmur hired Bettcher as the New York Giants defensive coordinator. New Giants head coach Joe Judge decided not to re-sign Betcher and instead hired Patrick Graham for the 2020 season. In 2021, he was hired as a defensive assistant by the San Francisco 49ers, who finished third in total yards allowed (310.0 per game) and eighth in rushing yards allowed (103.5).
