Jemaine Clement was born in Masterton Greater, Wellington, New Zealand, on January 10, 1974. His mother raised them along with his two brothers. He attended Makoura College in Masterton. He later relocated to Wellington and enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington to study drama and film.

At university, he met Taika Waititi, with whom he formed The Humourbeasts, and So You’re a Man. He met Bret McKenzie while still at university, and they formed “Flight of the Conchords” after performing in Edinburgh.
