Jennifer Tilly was born on September 16, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, into very humble circumstances. Her father was a car salesman, and her mother was both a teacher and an aspiring actress. Jennifer, the second of four children in her family, was greatly inspired by her mother and frequently accompanied her to her mother’s theater performances.
Jennifer’s parents divorced when she was five. Jennifer’s mother moved all four of her children to British Columbia, where she spent the majority of her childhood. Jennifer was never the studious type, despite being very artistic as a child. As a result, she was a frequent target of bullying during her school days in Canada.
She went to ‘Belmont High School’ with two of her younger sisters, and while they were initially referred to as “the three musketeers” as a joke, it gradually escalated into severe name-calling and verbal abuse.
During her high school years, she began to develop an interest in theater, which led her to actively participate in plays as an extra with the assistance of her mother. Her mother encouraged all of her children to develop an appreciation for art. Jennifer was inspired to pursue the performing arts, whereas her younger sister Rebecca went on to become a well-known post-impressionist painter.
She studied theater and received her BA degree from ‘Stephens College’ in Missouri to hone her acting skills. She went straight into acting after that.
She moved to New York to be a part of the city’s thriving theater scene. She had avoided going to Los Angeles (LA) for a long time, but when the theater failed to provide her with enough bread and butter, she had no choice but to relocate to LA.
