Jermall was born on May 19, 1990, in Lafayette, Louisiana, United States. JermellCharlo, his identical twin brother, joined him in the world one minute after he was born. The brothers are Alief Hastings High School alumni from Houston, Texas.

The two brothers were inextricably linked. They went to the gym with their father and learned boxing from him. He was able to join the USA Olympic team in 2008, however, he was unable to compete due to a toe injury. He began competing in amateur categories and finished with a record of 65 victories and 6 losses.

Jermall made his professional debut against Cimmaron Davis on August 12, 2008. He won the fight through technical knockout in the second round. On July 11, 2009, he met Deon Nash and easily won the bout by unanimous decision.

He also defeated Carlos Garcia, his twin brother’s former opponent, by unanimous decision. For five years, Charlo remained undefeated against fighters like Orlando Lora, Antwone Smith, and Norberto Gonzalez.

Cornelius Bundrage was required to defend his championship against Jermall Charlo in May of 2015. The fight was originally scheduled for July 25th, but it was moved to September 12th of that year.

This was due to Bundrage receiving a nasty cut above his left eye while sparring. Jermall put up a stunning performance on the day of the bout, knocking Bundrage out in the third round. With this victory, Charlo became the IBF light middleweight champion.

Jermall Charlo officially vacated his IBF light middleweight title on February 16th, 2017 in order to move up to the middleweight class.
