Jerry Pinkney, a well-known illustrator, died. Pinkney died today from a heart attack, according to his long-time agent Sheldon Fogelman.

Pinkney explained that he coped with the harsh reality of his situation by creating art. While living in a six-room, two-story house with five siblings in Philadelphia’s Germantown district, he earned money for painting supplies by shining shoes. Drawing, he claimed, was his safe haven.

Pinkney influenced many artists, including James Ransome and his son, Brian Pinkney, who is now a children’s book illustrator.

“At heart, I am a storyteller,” Pinkney told the Society of Illustrators. “There’s something special about knowing that your stories can change people’s perceptions of the world and their place in it.”
