Haslam began his career at Pilot Corporation in 1976 and became vice president of sales, development, and operations by 1980. The pilot operated 100 convenience stores at the time, with annual fuel sales of approximately 125 million gallons. It opened its first travel center in 1981, and Haslam was named president and CEO in 1996. Pilot Corporation reached another milestone in 2001 when it merged with Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC to form Pilot Travel Centers LLC.
In 2006, Haslam was the Tennessee state-wide campaign chair for United States Senator Bob Corker, and in 2012, he was the State-wide Finance Chairman for Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, his brother. He was reported to have purchased the Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew SC from Anthony Precourt, who wanted to relocate the club to Austin, Texas, in late 2018.
Haslam, along with his wife and former team physician Pete Edwards, took over as owners on January 1, 2019, after a deal to buy the club from Precourt was finalized.
