Joe Exotic was indicted and arrested in Gulf Breeze, Florida on September 7, 2018. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the United States Marshals Service conducted an investigation. On 17 federal accusations of animal maltreatment and two counts of murder for hire, a federal jury found him guilty.

He was found guilty of eight Lacey Act breaches, nine Endangered Species Act offenses, and two charges of employing someone to murder a woman in Florida. Joe Exotic forged wildlife paperwork, as well as killing five tigers and selling them across state borders.
