John Deacon’s Profession & Career

He joined his first band, The Opposition, when he was 14 years old, and played rhythm guitar. He had purchased that guitar with money borrowed from the group’s founder, Richard Young. After a year of playing, he moved to the bass guitar. His other function in the band was as an archivist. Deacon stayed with the band until 1969 when he was admitted to study at Chelsea College in London.

He had a strong urge to join a band after a year of studying, despite the fact that he had not brought his amplifier or bass. In 1970, he met Roger Taylor, Brian May, and Freddie Mercury of the band Queen, but he was unimpressed. He later established a band called Deacon, which only made one performance.

When the Queen band lost its bassist in 1971, John auditioned for the position and won. His first concert with the band was at a College of Estate Management in Kensington. Deacon was listed as “Deacon John” on the band’s first album, which was released in 1973. This changed the next year when he chose to be credited under his real name.

Deacon’s songwriter contribution appeared on the band’s third album, Sheer Heart Attack, which was released in 1974. Stone Cold Crazy and Misfire are two of his tracks. He penned You’re My Best Friend, Another One Bites The Dust and other songs for the following albums.

Deacon was important in the band’s success, and he had a large say in how the band was organized. They had a falling out with another band member May, and he went on to play in other bands in the 1980s. He collaborated with musicians such as Elton John, Montserrat Caballe, and Errol Brown. In 1997, he formally announced his retirement.

Achievements and Awards

His passion and contribution as a bassist have not gone unnoticed. He received honors such as the Moulin Rouge Award and the Flash Gordon Award. He also received nominations for the OFTA Film Award and the Anthony Asquith Award. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Queen.

John Deacon’s Wife, Marriage & Relationship

On January 18, 1975, John married his current wife, Veronica Tetzlaff. He has six children and resides in Putney, Southwest London, with his family. Deacon has long been dedicated to his family, and the Queens band initially parted ways with their old management company Trident as they refused to lend him the money he needed to put a down payment on a property for his family.

Deacon was devastated by the death of fellow band member Freddie Mercury in November 1991, and he reduced his musical activity as a result. He stated that replacing Freddie was impossible and that he was done. In 1997, he announced his formal retirement from music.
