Who is John Prine? John Prine was born in Maywood, Illinois, on October 10, 1946. William Mason Prine was his father’s name, and Verna Valentine was his mother’s. His father worked as a tool and die manufacturer, while his mother stayed at home. David, Doug, and Billy were his three brothers. They would return to their hometown of Paradise, Kentucky, in the summers to visit family. His brother, David, taught him how to play the guitar when he was 14 years old.

Prine attended Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and Maywood, Illinois’ Proviso Township High School (later known as Proviso East).
