Josh Benson’s Profession & Career
After a trial, he was picked to play for the Thurrock District squad at Herringham Primary School in Chadwell St. Mary. An Arsenal scout observed him competing for Thurrock in a tournament when he was only seven years old and invited him for a trial.
Other clubs interested included Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Millwall. He began training with Arsenal when he was eight years old, although he was not an immediate standout for the team. He was one of three players left out of the squad for the trip to Spain.
Furthermore, he eventually evolved into one of the team’s finest players, captaining the young teams, and got a two-year scholarship when he was 16 years old. During his first year on scholarship, he suffered a knee injury that kept him out for four months.[4] Arsenal informed him in the spring of 2018 that once his scholarship ended, he would not be offered a professional contract.
Burnley
After learning of his availability, Burnley of the Premier League approached him for a trial. Michael Duff, the club’s under-23 manager, persuaded him to join in the summer of 2018. After a clear road to the first team was laid out, he signed a two-year professional contract. Duff left to become manager of Cheltenham Town a few months later, and Steve Stone took his place. Regardless, the two men got along well.
Furthermore, Benson began training with the first team on a regular basis and was named to the squad for a January 2019 away game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but he was not utilized as a substitute. He played an important role for Burnley on their preseason trip to Portugal for the 2019-20 season. After preseason, he expected to be a regular member of the first-team squad, but an injury halted his progress. Despite this, Josh remained a fixture on the under-23 team, occasionally serving as captain.
Furthermore, on January 18, 2020, he joined EFL League Two club Grimsby Town on loan, where he teamed up with fellow under-23 player Anthony Glennon to acquire first-team experience. The move was made possible by manager Ian Holloway’s past scouting work at Blackpool with Burnley’s chief operating officer Matt Williams.

When Grimsby needed a left-back, Williams offered Glennon, and Benson joined a week later after Holloway saw him play a few times. He scored his first professional goal in February 2020, earning his team a 2-1 victory over Morecambe by scoring the game-winning goal in the 86th minute. The season was cut short owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, thus his loan was only for two months, but he made an impact on Holloway by scoring twice in 11 matches. Benson came off the bench for Burnley after the Premier League started in July, but he didn’t play in any of them.
Burnley agreed to a one-year contract extension in the summer of 2020. Holloway contacted Burnley in August 2020 to request that Benson and Glennon be loaned back to Grimbsy. EFL Championship clubs wanted to loan him out again, but Burnley elected to keep him due to the tiny size of the squad and the lack of transfer activity.

On September 17, 2020, he made his first team debut against Sheffield United in an EFL Cup match, coming on as a substitute for Ashley Westwood as the Clarets advanced on penalties. A week later, he made his entire debut in the same tournament, when Burnley defeated Millwall 2-0 at The Den.
He took the place of the injured Josh Brownhill in the starting lineup for Burnley’s Premier League debut against Manchester City on November 28, 2020, at the City of Manchester Stadium. Sean Dyche, the manager, complimented his performance as “terrific” despite the team’s 5-0 loss despite playing the full 90 minutes. A few days after the game, Steve Stone alleged that plans had been made to loan him out during the January transfer window. He signed a new contract in December 2020 that extended through June 2023, with an additional 12-month extension in the club’s favor, after making five first-team appearances.
