Kyle Gass was born in Walnut Creek, California on July 14, 1960. He attended Las Lomas High School and was a member of the marching band. Gass graduated high school in 1979 and went on to UCLA, where he met future celebrity Tim Robbins. Robbins persuaded him to join the Actor’s Gang, where he met his future bandmate, Jack Black.

Gass and Black collaborated to form Tenacious D, a comedy rock band dubbed the “Greatest Band on Earth.” Throughout the 1990s, Gass made a number of minor film appearances. Kyle Gass Band is his own supergroup, which he formed after the dissolution of his first side project, Trainwreck, in 2011.
