Lee Greenwood was born on October 27, 1942, in South Gate, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Lee spent most of his childhood in Sacramento on his maternal grandparents’ chicken farm after his parents divorced. He began singing in church when he was only seven years old.
In 1969, Lee joined the Chester Smith Band and made his first television appearance. After a while, he began working for the well-known country performer Del Reeves.
