Lex Luger began playing football in high school in Orchard Park, New York. His football skills were recognized, and he was awarded a scholarship that put him at Pennsylvania State University. He opted to transfer to the University of Miami after studying here for a semester.

Lex Luger faced Nikita Kollof, whom he had defeated on July 11, 1987. During the battle, while Earl Ebner was on the bottom of the cage, manager James J Dillon tossed a chair on the cage. Lex Luger pocketed that chair and hit Nikita Kollof in the back of the head to win the tournament, and Kollof went unconscious. Lex grabbed him and tossed him onto Torture Rack. With no response, the referee lifted up Kollof’s hand and dropped it three times. As a result, Lex Luger was declared the winner by the referee.

Luger enjoyed challenging the wrestling teams Four Horsemen and Windham. Later, he participated in a wrestling match in Baltimore with Ric Flair, the Horseman leader for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. When Luger came in a Limousine, the four Horsemen attacked him. He was injured and left bleeding in the parking lot. That event was shown live on television. The referee called a halt to the match because the Four Horsemen had pounded Lex hard on a cut, causing his forehead to bleed profusely.

Lex Luger intended to take a formal break from wrestling between 2002 and 2007. He did not, however, retire and continued to compete in other sports. He currently participates in WWE events.

Lex Luger married Peggy, with whom he has two children, Brian and Lauren Ashley. On April 19, 2003, Luger engaged in domestic abuse with Elizabeth Hulette, a live-in girlfriend at their Marietta, Georgia townhouse. Luger struck her during the argument.

In another incident, Luger was caught driving under the influence. He was slugging while speaking with the cops. Hulette was a passenger in the automobile, and the police summoned a taxi to take her home. Luger was also driving with an expired license.

Hulette died on March 1, 2003, after combining hydrocodone and Alprazolam pills with vodka. She died in Marietta, in the house they shared. After discovering numerous illegal narcotics, police arrested Luger and charged him with 13 felony charges of drug possession. Luger was released from custody after posting a $27,000 bond. The authorities asked that Liger serve five years of probation and submit to drug tests.
