Little Richard was an American musician, singer, and songwriter whose flamboyant, driving style helped define the 1950s early rock ‘n’ roll era. With his croons, wails, and screams, Little Richard turned songs like “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally” into enormous singles and inspired bands like the Beatles.

Childhood and Early Years

Richard Penniman, the third of 12 children, was born on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia. He joined Dr. Hudson’s Medicine Show after being tossed out of the house before performing at Tick Tock Club, a local nightclub. In 1967, his album The Explosive Little, which he made with his friend Larry Williams, did not chart on Billboard.
